Woodhands - Remorsecapade
(Paper Bag Records; 2010)
6/10
A sophomore album can be a deathtrap for any “up and coming, but not quite there yet” band. There are expectations to be met and it can take its toll on fresh-faced musicians, forcing them to produce stretched, distorted or even watered-down material. Unfortunately, this toll is visible on Woodhands’ second effort Remorsecapade.
The beats are catchy but sound contrived and forceful, which creates an unbalance within the overall chemistry of the album. The vocals make up for the shortcoming by delivering a raw energy found in their live sets.
However, this energy is not enough to make up for the flawed backing beats. The album strikes a few interesting notes, particularly towards the middle of the album and makes for a good dance record. But on the whole, Woodhands fail to impress and this album misses the mark.
