Madcaps - Juice
(Voxtone Records; 2010)
6/10
If hard rock had a kid sister she would be named the Madcaps. This local Montreal band recently saw the release of their fourth full-length album Juice under their Voxtone Records label.
Integrating heavy guitar and drums with saxophone, the Madcaps try to avoid the generic rock sound but end up sounding like strange blend of Queens of the Stone Age and The Specials. Though the music is refreshingly different from today’s typical indie-rock sound, the album strikes the listener as both conventional and a little haphazard. On “Bring Me Back to Heaven” they add an organ solo à la The Doors, which comes off as completely random, if not a little irritating. Yet some tracks do make it difficult not to rock out and are reminiscent of Black Sabbath at its best.
Juice is for the listener who enjoys their rock clean and simple.
Title Track: “Caught In The Middle”
