jj - n° 3
(Secretly Canadian/Sincerely Yours; 2010)

7/10

The sequentially titled  n° 3 marks the second full-length effort from the Swedish indie-pop duo jj and their first release following their signing with Secretly Canadian. Last year n° 2 garnered a fair amount of critical acclaim, with some critics ranking it above Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, leaving expectations high for the follow-up.
The album opens up with the dreary piano-driven “My Life.” While most of the other tracks showcase the lush vocals of Elin Kastlander, the slowed down pace of “My Life” doesn’t exactly compliment her range.
Thankfully the album does not follow in the same vein as “My Life” and moves towards Kastlander’s strength, indie pop, and the occasional dash of discothèque rhythm. “You Know” comes out as the prime example of how the mix can work.
n° 3 doesn’t disappoint, but it’s just not all that exciting or innovative.
