Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
(Parlophone/Virgin; 2010)
8/10
Gorillaz, everyone’s favourite virtual band, is back with their third studio album, Plastic Beach. The band’s four cartoon members, created by artist Jamie Hewlett, play music composed by Damon Albarn, formerly of the Brit-pop band Blur, who in turn collaborates with a host of artists. Snoop Dogg, Mos Def and Lou Reed are just three names that grace this latest release.
“Stylo,” the first single, features a strong, almost retro beat, perfect for head bobbing. But “On Melancholy Hill” is arguably the most infectious song of the album. Despite its name, the music is upbeat, and the dreamy style in which the lyrics are sung make it the album’s brightest moment.
Plastic Beach is basically a continuation of the pattern Gorillaz started on their last album, Demon Days. If you like Gorillaz, you’ll like this album. But there’s nothing groundbreaking about this latest offering.
