The Concordian is currently looking for new staff for the 2010 – 2011 school year.

We are currently accepting applications for the following hired positions:




Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for overseeing all content-related operations of the Concordian Student Newspaper. They are responsible for working with section editors to develop story ideas, the editing of all stories, working with the photo editor and production staff to select photos. The editor-in-chief will also work with the production manager to implement production process and to ensure a smooth workflow between editors, copy editors and production staff. The editor-in-chief is responsible for supervising all editorial and production staff and dealing with any issues that occur.



Candidates for editor-in-chief should have experience as an editor at the Concordian or another comparable publication. The editor-in-chief should have excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge of English grammar. Candidates should be very comfortable with Canadian Press style and have a basic knowledge of libel law.

Applicants should submit a letter of intent, their C.V./resumé and up to four writing samples.

This is a paid position.



Production Manager

The production manager is responsible for overseeing the production process of the newspaper. Working alongside the editor-in-chief, they are responsible for the overall design and layout of the Concordian. The production manager oversees and organizes the newspaper’s weekly production process.

Candidates should be well organized, have strong layout/design skills. The candidate should deal well with pressure and deal well with a fast-paced work-environment. Candidates must have extensive experience with digital layout software, preferably InDesign.

Applicants should submit a letter of intent, their C.V./resumé and up to four samples of layout/newspaper design.

This is a paid position.



Copy Editors

Copy editors are responsible for editing stories for clarity, accuracy and style. Candidates should have strong English grammar skill and be familiar with journalistic writing. Knowledge of Canadian Press style is a valuable asset.

Applicants for copy editor should submit their C.V./resumé and up to four writing samples. They will also be required to complete an editing test.

Copy editors are paid a small weekly honorarium.



Production Assistants

Production assistants assist the production manager with the layout and design of the newspaper. Candidates should be familiar with digital layout software, preferably InDesign.

Production assistants are paid a small weekly honorarium.





We will be holding elections for the following positions on Sunday March 28 at 2 p.m. Elections will be held in the Concordian office at Loyola campus, CC-431:

Section Editors

All section editors should have strong English language skills and should have experience with journalistic writing. They should also be familiar with Canadian Press style. Section editors are responsible for finding, developing, assigning and editing all stories in their section. They are required to work closely with writers, the editor-in-chief, photo editor, graphics editor and production staff. Section editors must be able to stick to deadlines and to ensure that writers do as well.

Candidates for section editor positions should also be prepared to do a great deal of writing.



News Editor

The news editor is responsible for finding and developing news stories that would be of interest or importance to a Concordia audience.

Life Editor

The life editor is responsible for covering lifestyle, human-interest and feature stories that would be of interest to a Concordia audience.

Arts Editor

The arts editor is responsible for covering film, theatre, visual and performance arts. The arts editor should be familiar with a wide variety of arts. The arts editor should cover works that are created by Concordia students and works that would be of particular interest to a Concordia audience.

Music Editor


The music editor is responsible for covering music created by Concordia students, or of particular interest to a Concordia audience. The music editor should be familiar with a wide variety of popular music and be prepared to focus on new and up and coming artists and groups.

Sports Editor


The sports editor is responsible for covering Concordia sports. They should have a strong knowledge of several sports. The sports editor should ensure coverage all school teams. The sports editor should also be prepared to cover other sports/sporting events that would be of interest to a Concordia audience.

Opinions Editor

The opinions editor is responsible for ensuring a diverse opinions section that showcases a wide variety of viewpoints. They should ensure that issues affecting a Concordia audience are debated in the section, along with issues of a more general interest.



Section editors are paid a weekly honorarium.

All applications for section editor positions should include a letter of intent, C.V./resumé, and up to four clippings.



Other Editors



Graphics Editor

The graphics editor works with the section editors to develop and design graphical concepts. The graphics editor should have strong artistic skills and be prepared to develop, design, draw and commission informational graphics, illustrations and editorial cartoons.

Applicants for graphics editor should submit a letter of intent, C.V./resumé and up to four relevant samples of their work.

The graphics editor is paid per piece.



Photo Editor

The photo editor is responsible for working with the section editors to ensure that stories have accompanying photographs. They are responsible for giving assignments to photographers. The photo editor must also work with production staff to choose the photos that will appear in the newspaper. The photo editor must also edit photos (cropping,colour adjustment etc.) and should be familiar with Photoshop.

Applicants for photo editor should submit a letter of intent, C.V./resumé and up to four sample photos. In lieu of submitting photo samples by email, applicants for photo editor may instead choose to provide a link to an online portfolio.

The photo editor is paid a weekly honorarium.



Online Editor

The online editor is responsible for updating and maintaining the Concordian website. The online editor should also work with section editors to develop online only content to compliment stories appearing in the newspaper. The online editor should also monitor readership statistics. The online editor should work to develop blogs and other exclusive online content on the site. The online editor will also be responsible for maintaining the Concordian’s presence in popular social media along with investigating and integrating any other online tools that will improve our online presence.

Applicants for online editor should submit a letter of intent, C.V./resumé and up to four samples of relevant work (including, but not limited to, blogs, videos, sound slides, websites).

The online editor is paid a weekly honorarium.



Assistant Editors

Each section may have one or more assistant editors. Assistant editors are responsible for assisting the editor of their section and will include: writing, editing, finding and developing story ideas, and working with writers.

Applicants should indicate which section they are applying for and include a cover letter, C.V./resumé and up to four writing samples.

Assistant editors are volunteers.
