Celebrations turn ugly

Hundreds celebrated on Ste-Catherine Street Wednesday night as the Montreal Canadiens completed their second round series by soundly beating defending champions the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2. Fans waved flags, scaled trees, burned stuffed penguins and lit fireworks. Ste-Catherine Street was closed to cars since early in the evening in anticipation of rioting, and eventually the crowd turned violent. Riot police contained minor fires, broken bottles and public mischief, and dispersed the crowds with tear gas towards 1 a.m. At an early Thursday morning press conference, police authorities announced 32 people had been arrested. Two stores, a SAQ and a Foot Locker, were broken into and had merchandise stolen.

The Habs will face off against either the Philadelphia Flyers or the Boston Bruins at the conference final on Sunday.  It will be the furthest the team has gone since their 1993 Stanley Cup.
