Black Prairie – Feast of the Hunters’ Moon
(Sugar Hill Records; 2010)

7/10

It is not a surprise to hear the blend of folk, bluegrass and American roots that make up Feast of the Hunters’ Moon when you take a look at the Black Prairie’s roster. Based in Portland, Ore., Black Prairie features three members of The Decemberists (Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, and Chris Funk) as well as two local folk musicians.
However, anyone searching for anything vaguely similar to The Decemberists will be sorely disappointed, Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is mainly instrumental and heavily influenced by traditional folk music of yore.
There’s a peculiar cinematic quality to the instrumentals of Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. “Ostinato Del Caminito” stands out among the 11 original compositions, its screeching violin giving it an air of gypsy mystique. There are also two traditional songs rearranged for the album. One of them is the album’s gem, “Red Rocking Chair.”
