Balmorhea – Constellations
(Western Vinyl; 2010)

7/10

The stars have inspired artists for centuries and now Balmorhea, a five-piece experimental instrumental band from Austin, Texas, can be added to the list of skygazers with their fourth full-length release, Constellations.
The album opens with the sparse piano-driven “To The Order Of Night.” Brief silences between the plinking of piano keys adds a tinge of isolation and loneliness fit for the vast expanse of the universe.
“Bowsprit” gently picks up the pace with an acoustic guitar, banjo, and strings giving Constellations a breath of life. But the next track, “Winter Circle,” brings the energy back down to the meditative opener.
Constellations continues to unfold in the same sort of up and down pace resting between minimalist instrumental tracks and lush energetic arrangements. While it’s not easy to explore a concept solely through instrumentals, Constellations does capture some of the wonders and beauty of the final frontier.

Trial Track: “Bowsprit”
